08 How we measured
How we did this
Exactly what we ran to produce this report — and, just as important, what it cannot tell you. Read this before you act on anything above it.
We crawled 88 pages of saltfern.com twice — once as a browser, once as an AI crawler — ran 22 machine-readability checks, then asked 4 AI engines 40 questions a sunscreen buyer asks, four times each, and read all 640 answers. Every raw answer is stored and available on request.
- We cannot observe how many people ask these questions, so the Repeat stage scores correctness and presence, not traffic.
- AI answers are non-deterministic and vary by user, session and location; the printed range is measured across the 4 rotations.
- Google AI Overviews is Google's own surface with no selectable model; it is identical on every plan.
ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews are where shopping-discovery traffic concentrates. Claude is a real, widely used assistant with a different traffic mix — its score is a true measurement of a smaller shopping surface.
Extraction is structural, never evaluative: which brands were named, in what order, which URLs were cited, what factual claims were made. No AI judges the quality of another AI's answer.
